Night of the Dead in Michoacan - and especially in the Lake Patzcuaro Region - is an ancestral ritual that unites the community, and is a unique experience, one that everyone wants to live.

The Day of the Dead is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexico.  In Michoacan people make their preparations in advance to honor their dead during the Night of the Dead, this ritual in Purépecha is called Animecha Kejtzitakua and it is a great event for the community.

Although November 1 and 2 are the main days to celebrate the Night of the Dead in Patzcuaro, the magic of this tradition extends over several weeks. The preparation of altars, ancestral dances, and the creation of "bread of the dead" are just some of the activities that begin long before. The best time to visit Pátzcuaro and live this experience is from the end of October to the beginning of November.

This year, 2024, Michoacán, through the Secretary of State Tourism, invites you to have an experience of a lifetime; a series of fantastic experiences are being prepared for your enjoyment.

It is important to mention that these experiences will have limited space and are subject to availability, so we recommend that you make your reservation in advance, as much as possible.

Ten different experiences have been designed for you to better understand the preparations of this event, which is the Night of the Deadin Michoacán.

Delve into a world of color and tradition in the marigold fields in Copandaro.  Walk among the magnolia fields, breathe the fresh air and feel the energy of an ancestral tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.

The Catrina Fair in Capula will have workshops and cultural activities in addition to the sale of handicrafts, another experience not to be missed from October 20 to November 3.

In Cuanajo discover through this experience the ancestral art of the wooden horses, a unique offering to guide the faithful departed in their return. In Cuanajo, each wooden horse is a symbol of love and respect. Enter into this tradition and live the magic of the Night of the Dead in Michoacan.

Learn the art of building an altar of the dead in Patzcuaro! in these workshops organized by the Ministry of Tourism of Michoacanyou will learn more about our traditions and discover the meaning of each element and create the offerings to honor your own loved ones, a unique experience that will connect you with your traditions.

There will also be a series of artisan workshops in Tzintzuntzan, Ihuatzio, Santa Fe de la Laguna, and Tocuaro, as well as a workshop and tastings with traditional cooks.

The artisan workshops are a unique opportunity to learn ancestral techniques, interact with local artisans and, at the same time, support the local economy. By attending the traditional cooking workshops, you will not only learn how to prepare delicious dishes, but you will also be able to interact with the cooks and learn first-hand about their knowledge and customs.
