Those Crazy Masks of Tocuaro

Tocuaro is one of the villages on the banks of Patzcuaro Lake that our guests at  Hotel Mansion Iturbe – and they invariably love Mexican folk art – always want to get to know better.  Tocuaro is well known for its masks, but the visitor will also be astonished by the embroidery of the local women artisans, and the wooden furniture, as well.

Tocuaro is a small indigenous community on the Lake.  It’s part of the municipality of Erongaricuaro, about 20 minutes away from Patzcuaro on Federal Route 14.

All year long, you can enjoy the handiwork of the local artisans busy making their famous masks out of a single piece of wood – works of art that gradually evolve into fantastic figures that go quite beyond our imagination.

But the time to visit this enchanting village is around February 2, the celebration of Los Negritos, or the Little Dark Ones.  It lasts several days, during the course of which is held an indigenous competition of folk art.
