Santa Fe de la Laguna – An Example of Community Development by Way of Tourism
Santa Fe de la Laguna is another must-visit lake-side
village. It is a community rich in history, culture, tradition, art, and
gastronomy, where a group of especially enterprising, well-organized women have
turned to the potential of tourism to further develop their community.
Don Vasco de Quiroga chose Santa Fe de la Laguna in 1533 for his first Purépecha “hospice.” It would act as a prototype, establishing forms of organization, cooperation, and production, based on the “Utopias of Tomás Moro” and the customs of the Purépecha communities.
Live a unique experience, and interact with the locals who have an enormous cultural and historic heritage. The women of Santa Fe de la Laguna are the primary stimuli of this movement; they are determined to better their lives and educate their children by developing communal businesses based on tourism.
Get to know their cultural heritage, carefully preserved, safeguarding the rituals and traditions that go back to the time of Don Vasco de Quiroga. Discover their way of life as you are warmly welcomed by community.
Enter their world of gastronomy with its varied tastes and aromas that recall recipes handed down for generations. Traditional cuisine of Michoacán was elected to represent Mexico to get the recognition as a World Heritage by the UNESCO, as this traditional food from Michoacan has the ingredients that are characteristic of the Mexican cuisine.
Visit their artisan workshops and admire their centuries-old techniques. These techniques, although largely unchanged, are sometimes modified to reflect modern sentiments. For example, their ceramics and earthenware are now lead-free, making their products more in line with more up-to-date standards, and increasing their appeal.
You will be surprised by these dynamic, intrepid women leaders who have been hosts of important personalities, and national and international ambassadors of Michoacan hospitality.
They have benefited from training and financing by the government. This has meant an improvement for their families and their community and, in turn, an increase in competition and productivity.
The tenacious
women of this community have been instrumental in improving the lives of
everyone through the advancement of tourism.
Live an unforgettable experience and visit Santa Fe de la Laguna on Lake Patzcuaro, taste their delicious traditional food, and enjoy the ample hospitality of the Purépechas.
