New Collective Brands for Michoacán Artisans
A few days ago, six Michoacan handicrafts were awarded "collective brand" certifications, in recognition of the work of the Michoacan artisans who make the clay pots of Cocucho, the “fraying work” of San Felipe de los Herreros, the embroidery of Zacán, the stitchery of Cocucho, the shawls of Ahuirán, and "Maque" of Michoacan.

Let’s give these artisans a big pat on the back, which puts Michoacan on a pretty high platform. For us at Hotel Mansion Iturbe, it is a great pleasure to have people from various locations come to buy folk art produced by Michoacan artisans.
We at Mansion Iturbe invite you to become familiar with these new
“collective brands” of Michoacan.
In a nutshell, here’s what it’s all about:
These
certifications are granted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property
(IMPI). Collective trademarks are an instrument that can contribute
significantly to the economic and social development of Michoacan's artisan
communities.
We must remember
that handicrafts are a fundamental pillar in the economy of indigenous
communities. The sale of products made by the native peoples of Michoacan
allows them to obtain income to cover their needs and build a better future for
their families.

Handicrafts reflect
the history, traditions and worldview of the communities. Through their
designs, colors and ancestral techniques that have been inherited through the
years from parents to children, the identity of each town of Michoacan is
narrated, a great legacy that has endured the passage of time and that dates
from long before the arrival of Don Vasco de Quiroga, who perfected these
techniques raising the quality and diversifying the handicraft production.
Why are these “collective brands” so important?
- They set apart Michoacan artisans from other regions or other countries, even if they may be similar in some regards.
- They guard against “pirates,” protecting cultural heritages of the artisans.
- They guarantee the authenticity of the artisans, giving the consumers a good dose of confidence.
- They maintain the rich culture and artisan tradition of Michoacan at national and international levels.
- They position the Michoacan artisans in more competitive markets.
- They generate a healthy sense of value for the artisans, increasing their price and potential for sale.
- They create a sense of unity among the artisans, allowing them to work together to reach their objectives.
- They facilitate quality management and marketing of handicrafts.
- They promote sustainable development of artisan activity in Michoacan.
Without doubt,
these collective brands are a powerful tool that can contribute to the economic
and social development of the artisans of Michoacan.
Therefore, we
invite you to buy handicrafts, and when you buy them remember that you are
buying a piece that is unique, but also full of meaning. With this purchase you
will be supporting the economy of many families and remember to always pay the fair price and say no to
bargaining.
In Michoacan we are proud to have a rich handicraft
tradition. Michoacan's
handicrafts are a living testimony of the culture and identity of the state, and in this
context Patzcuaro is a lovely town that keeps among its cobblestone streets an
ancestral legacy of creativity and passion.
