Crafts in Michoacán
For lovers of Mexican Folk Art, Michoacán
has a special place. We have a huge variety of handicrafts; the Instituto
del Artesano Michoacano has located 16 artisan wares throughout the
state.

In Michoacán we find five ethnic groups:
purépechas, mazahuas, nahuas, Otomí and Matlatzingas or Piringuas. Each of them
has its own specialties, which the groups have managed to preserve for
generations.

The origin of Michoacan handicrafts dates
back to pre-Hispanic times, later these existing techniques merged with those
brought by the Spaniards at the time of evangelization, having a great
influence to this day Don Vasco de Quiroga.

Our dear Tata Vasco, taught new techniques
and perfected others that had already been carried out by the Purépechas.

Folk art is a
manifestation of our culture and a trade that is learned and passed on from
generation to generation. A talent that is learned over the years; it is common
for children to start small and learn from their parents and grandparents,
becoming a legacy for future generations.

Through their art, our Michoacán artisans
show their human sensitivity. They invest a lot of time, expressing their
creativity with an aesthetic complexity that continues to surprise us,
sometimes creating works that can be absolutely unique.

In our region of Pátzcuaro Lake, we have
great masters of Mexican Folk Art, who have been multi-awarded
nationally and internationally; we also have talented young people who
gradually earn a place and recognition. Many of them still unknown, but very
capable.
Explore the markets, look closely at the different
stalls in the communities when you visit them and especially during the
festivities and fairs.

The main exhibitions that you cannot miss are the
traditional Noche de Muertos (Night of the Dead) in Pátzcuaro
the first week of November, and the Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday)
in Uruapan; where you will find contests with unique pieces. Two
must-see places for collectors of Mexican Folk Art.
