Crafts Are a Tool for Women's Empowerment
Handicrafts are one of the most important attractions for those who visit us at Hotel Mansion Iturbe in Pátzcuaro. We are in a region that is rich in handicrafts, where many women are responsible for safeguarding traditions and techniques that have been preserved for generations, because many men have had to immigrate to the United States, and many women necessarily have overtaken the economic responsibilities of their families.
These artisan women in Michoacán are the ones who transfer this knowledge and ensure that these techniques carry on the new generations.
When you have the opportunity to chat with a craftsman, you realize that they love their work. Many learned it as mere children, collaborating with their families in their craft workshops, doing a part of the work or lending a hand to their parents and grandparents.
Today, in different communities of Michoacán, such as Tzintzuntzan, Santa Fe de la Laguna, or Aranza, to name just a few, have organized cooperatives to get ahead together in an organized way. They collaborate with each other for the common good and, of course, to generate the best sales possible.
Working as artisans allows women to generate their own income and increase economic growth for the family.
The artisanal tradition continues today, as we can see when we visit the communities and their workshops; we see grandmothers, daughters and granddaughters working any number of handicrafts.
Women full of vitality and creativity transform various materials into art, which often tells us stories in their work, showing us the daily life or important moments of their community.
The art made by these women is embodied in their crafts that you can buy and take back home with you. By doing so, you contribute that part of our culture in Michoacán that remains in force: these pieces are part of our identity.
Many of these artisans have managed to gain national and international recognition for their effort and dedication. However, the Covid pandemic has greatly decreased tourism and the suspension of artisan expositions.
Now more than ever, when you visit us in Pátzcuaro, visit these communities and support them with your purchases. You will realize that with this simple action, you can transform the lives of many of these women, who seek to remain active and productive in the face of this complicated situation.
