Michoacán is a state well known for its agriculture; it holds first place in national production of different agricultural products such as avocado, lentils, strawberry, blackberry, peach, guavas, sweet potato, and plum.  It also stands out in the production of lime, mango, melon, grapefrult, lemon, pear, rice, sesame seed, tamarind, and much more.

You will find organic products that have been grown in their backyard orchards. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, a variety of aromatic herbs that they use to season their ancestral dishes, such as epazote, mint, anise, avocado leaf, nurite and “hoja santa” (a large leaf with a faint essence of anise that is used to wrap pork loin or in stir fry).

In the rainy season, you will also find a wide variety of mushrooms, pumpkin blossom, and huitlacoche; (fungus from corn plants, a delicacy!), without missing tender corn and zucchini.

By purchasing these products, we help to preserve biodiversity; so endemic varieties continue to be produced when they are in demand. An example of this are the different varieties of corn in the basins of Lake Pátzcuaro and Zirahuén.

In the market you will find fresh and seasonal products. For its location and accessibility of our Magic Village, products arrive from nearby regions, so you can enjoy the agricultural products of the nearby “tierra caliente.”.

If we expand the panorama a little further, we will find products already processed by hand, which are also very attractive for their extraordinary flavor such as cheeses and breads, the traditional uchepos and corundas or the incomparable blackberry tamales.

Finally, be sure to buy some kitchen implements of traditional Mexican cuisine made by hand; like a molcajete, a metate, a grinder, or a hand-made fan like the ones they use to fan coals.  The artisans of the region do wonders!

A visit to the market will allow you to learn more about the agricultural products that identify our region and above all to be able to taste and enjoy a pleasant experience at home. We suggest you take a handcrafted basket, full of Michoacán products.

If you are in town on Friday, you can attend the bartering market, which is held next to the market on the south side of the Temple of the Shrine of Guadalupe.
