Plant-Fiber Crafts around Lake of Pátzcuaro
Handicrafts made with plant fibers in Michoacán are
part of Mexican Folk Art. The
communities surrounding Lake Pátzcuaro
are remarkable with their widely diverse craftsmen of handicrafts made from
these natural elements, such as reed and straw.
Ancient
techniques have been perfected since the times of Don Vasco de Quiroga. They have become part of the
communities’ cultural identity and expression of creativity. And these
talents and skills will be invaluable for future generations.

Ihuatzio is the place to go for chuspata – or tule – figures
and furniture. This process involves creating a framework of thick iron
wire/rebar and wrapping reeds around the frame to create a sturdy but graceful
animal figure, furniture, or lamp.
