“Tortas de Tostada” of Santa Clara del Cobre

Michoacán cuisine is rich and varied, and in Pátzcuaro and the surrounding areas, it’s particularly so.  Many villages have their own specialties – and Santa Clara del Cobre has its own: " Torta de Tostada."

Santa Clara del Cobre, like Pátzcuaro, is a “Pueblo Mágico”.  It’s just 18 kilometers (8 miles) from Pátzcuaro along Route 120.  And yes, it’s the same Santa Clara del Cobre that is known for its lovely copperworks.

The famous “Torta de Tostada” de Santa Clara del Cobre may seem to many a rather unusual ítem, because it includes Mexican favorites: sandwich and toast. But it’s not your typical sandwich and toast.  The “toast” has an infusion of meat inside a small loaf of bread.  You just gotta try it!

Where can you try this delicacy? In the main square! While enjoying signature dish, you can check out the unique kiosk made in copper, and admire green, pine-covered mountains.  The originator (in 1965) of this treat can be found at the stand, “Tostadas Don Pancho.”  The sign is fashioned of – guess what? – hammered copper!

This unusual goodie is made with artisan bread and warmed in an oven. The key is their homemade ingredients; you’ll hear the crunch of the crispy toast when they close the sandwich which has been prepared before your very eyes!
