Antonio Arriaga Ochoa, an Illustrious Patzcuarence

Among the illustrious characters of Pátzcuaro, we find Antonio Arriaga Ochoa. Prominent lawyer, museum buff, historian, writer, and poet of the 20th century in Mexico.

Antonio Arriaga Ochoa, was a promoter of Pátzcuaro culture.  He was born in Pátzcuaro in January 1913, and died in Mexico City on December 25, 1974. He promoted the redevelopment of what is now the Casa de Los Once Patios in our magical village.

He carried out important work to restore the building where Generalisimo Morelos (Don José María Morelos y Pavón) was born.  This building subsequently became the Museum “Casa Natal de Morelos”.
He was also director of the Chapultepec Castle, National Museum of History for 16 years, beginning in 1955.
In the city of Morelia, the last January 30, a tribute in his honor was held as part of the 132nd anniversary of the Michoacán Regional Museum, of which he was also director.

Among his other accomplishments was the reopening of the Antonio Arriaga Ochoa Library, which has more than three thousand volumes and more than five thousand additional texts.  Among this collection are books donated from his personal library.
