Contest of Ofrendas of Day of the Dead in Pátzcuaro 2014

The Contest of Ofrendas (Altars)  of Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro was one of the many events that took place in our Magical Village, with the intent of preserving the traditions of the lakeside region.

In the gardens of the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, right in front of our Hotel Mansión Iturbe, our guests were able to appreciate this fabulous contest where the participants showcased their creativity and passion for the traditions by constructing some lovely, imaginative Day of the Dead Ofrendas.

We saw in the Ofrendas all of the regular elements of this season, like the ubiquitous marigold (flor de cempasúchil, or tiringuini tsïtsïki in Purépecha, and the “cloud” flower and an orchid known as ánimas.

Abundant fruits and vegetables and the traditional pan de muerto caught the eyes of every passerby.  Candles and incense and flowers – along with plenty of paper confetti – in the street complemented the altars.

The lovely statue of Don Vasco de Quiroga in the middle of the Plaza is worthy of special mention.  The figure itself had an enormous frame of marigolds, and there were actual fishing boats from Lake Pátzcuaro full of flowers in the fountain, and fish and flowers shaped from corn leaves.

The entire Plaza Don Vasco de Quiroga was manicured exquisitely for Day of the Dead and the artisan tents encircling the Plaza – like every year – were full of happy shoppers….  And right across the street from Hotel Mansión Iturbe!
