Looking for the best vacation in Mexico, come to Pátzcuaro!
Wake up, rediscover Mexico, carve your own path, do your homework and personalize your tour to discover the loveliest, most iconic spots of Michoacán.
Among the “Pueblos Mágicos” of
Mexico, Pátzcuaro has stood out through the years, with its heritage of
abundant attractions, including cultural, architectural, historical, culinary,
and natural.
Strolling the streets of Pátzcuaro
is to experience pure pleasure. Bit by bit, you will be enveloped in its
past. We would like to point out two not-to-be-missed historical sites: (1) You
gotta visit La Biblioteca Pública (Public Library) overlooking
the “Plaza Chica,” feasting your eyes on the famous, gigantic mural painted in
1942 by Juan O’Gorman, which depicts the history of Michoacán,
and (2) the old mayor’s office, the home of the spectacular mural painted just
a couple years ago by Juan Torres Calderón, which shows a brief history of Pátzcuaro.

Pátzcuaro was carefully planned even before the Spanish arrived. But
it really had its shining moments in the 16th century when Don Vasco de Quiroga made the pueblo the seat of religious power, and
proclaimed it as a real city of Michoacán.
The imposing “Plaza Grande” is actually
the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, right across the street from our HotelMansión Iturbe. The Plaza Grande impresses the visitor with its
dimensions (one of the largest in Mexico), as well as its enormous trees. You
may be surprised not to find a single religious building in sight of the plaza,
which is the norm in Mexico.

Instead, the Basílica of Our Lady of Health in Pátzcuaro is located a short distance up the hill (to the east). Our Lady of Health in Pátzcuaro is deeply venerated in all of Mexico and by foreign visitors, as well. There are often joyous processions of a replica of the Virgin de la Salud (la Virgen Peregrina) in outlying areas.

But in Pátzcuaro, you will also encounter celebrations of the greatest solemnity and silence, accented with bells and songs and fire crackers, traditions which have persisted throughout the years.

One of the most emblematic fold
traditions of the Lake Pátzcuaro region is “la Danza de losViejitos,” performed and originated by inhabitants of nearby Jarácuaro.
Before the Covid pandemic, the dancers performed weekly in the Plaza Grande,
but now they perform wherever they can, depending on the current state of the
pandemic.

Stroll the cobblestone streets of Pátzcuaro, sidewalks with wooden beams high above, Also a stone’s throw (well, almost!) from the Plaza Grande is the lovely Templo del Sagrario with its photogenic arches along the sidewalk.

If you feel the need for some quick energy during your walk, you will find local chocolate vendors and a variety of sweet shops. And on the west side of the Plaza Grande, there are several vendors of fine, local produced ice cream. The “nieve de pasta” is a real crowd pleaser.

Oh, did we mention food? Traditional Michoacán cuisine has to be tasted to believe how divine it is, with typical recipes prepared by Pátzcuaro families for generations. In our own restaurant (Hotel Mansión Iturbe’s Restaurante Doña Paca), you will enjoy some of these exquisite dishes, perhaps accompanied by a little glass of locally made mezcal or charanda another traditional liqueur of Michoacán.
