Sustainable Vacations in Pátzcuaro
Vacation time is upon us and it’s
time to plan your next trip. Pátzcuaro and its surroundings offer you ideal destinations to lay back.
Surroudings of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán |
We at Hotel Mansión Iturbe propose that you embark on an enchanting, fun,
and interesting vacation. In Pátzcuaro
and its environs, you will find different experiences to enjoy your free time,
while at the same time leaving a positive impact on your environment.

As always, get as much
information as you can beforehand so you can make intelligent decisions once
you get there. This will help give you the unique experiences you’re
looking for, and perhaps go to some destinations you hadn’t
considered. Once there, make it a point to interact with the locals,
and remember that they depend on you to sustain their livelihoods and keep their
rich traditions alive.
Respect the environment. Do
not throw garbage away in the Street or places you visit. Use the containers
provided if you don’t find one, wait until you find one.
This area is prone to forest
fires. A carelessly tossed cigarette from your car or a little
campfire left unattended could destroy acres.
If you visit the countryside,
resist the temptation to pick up an interesting rock or pick a beautiful
flower. Remember the value of a picture!

Appreciate the peace and
tranquility of your surroundings. If you want to listen to music
while you stroll down a deserted pathway in the middle of nowhere, put on your
earphones. Simply, be a responsible tourist.
Listen to the natural sounds
around you – or the lack of them! The silence on the islands of Pacanda, Yunuen, Tecuena, or Urandén can be downright
deafening. Sometimes, you’re afraid to take a step forward, afraid
that stepping on a twig or a dry leaf will interrupt the divine silence
surrounding you, as you are looking at the birds, plants, and insects.
Fishermen at Lake Patzcuaro |
You can hire a boat from one of the piers of Lake Pátzcuaro to take you wherever you want to
go. What’s more relaxing than a boat tour?

Wherever you disembark, think
about buying artisanware from the locals. You will get the best
prices, and you will help sustain the livelihoods of the inhabitants.

Last but not least, don’t eschew
the local foods! The locals take great lengths to make sure their
food is safe (otherwise, they wouldn’t be in business). “Traditional Michoacán Cuisine” is an
Intangible Heritage of Humanity – enjoy it!

Pátzcuaro and the Lake Area is a region full of tradition. Share in the celebrations,
always deferring to the cultural idiosyncrasies of the
community. You may not understand everything that is happening
around you at these events. But if you investigate the celebration
before you attend, you will have a better understanding of it.
