Paricutín Volcano: One of the Natural Wonders of the World – in our very own Michoacan

Paricutín Volcano is an amazing site that has been created by nature, and is considered as one of the Natural Wonders of the World.  It is a delight for the traveler, surrounded by stunning landscapes. That said, don’t forget the beauty of the typical villages nearby such as Angahuan and Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, and their delicious traditional cuisine and textile craftsmanship.

At Hotel Mansión Iturbe in Pátzcuaro, we receive guests from different countries who come to experience the natural wonders of the world. Volcán Paricutín is located about 93 kilometers (58 miles) from our Magic Village, by highway 14D. So your visit requires a full day. The village nearest to the volcano is Angahuan, where you can rent horses to reach the volcano.

The natural beauty of the Paricutín Volcano notwithstanding, another stunning fact about it is that it is perhaps the only volcano whose birth man has witnessed in our times: it is the youngest volcano on the American continent.

The Paricutin Volcano came to life in February 1943.  Nearby residents began to feel a series of tremors in the area near the municipality of Parangaricutiro.  On February 20, Dionisio Pulido and his wife were working on their fields when they felt the first tremors.  Then they saw fire coming out of the earth before their very eyes. This happened in the community of Paricutín; hence the name of the volcano.

Within days, geologists began arriving to study the phenomenon, which captivated the entire world.

There was not one single, enormous eruption, but a series of explosions in the ensuing months. The village of Paricutín was buried and its inhabitants had to move elsewhere. It also affected the village of San Juan Parangaricutiro (though to a lesser degree), whose inhabitants refused to leave their homes. The ashes from the eruptions reached places as far away as Morelia, and even Mexico City.

The Volcano continued its inexorable path of destruction for several years, with eruptions and lava flows.

Another must-see is the temple half-buried by lava near the town of Angahuan.  There is nothing like it in the world.  Our friend Andrew Carhartt shared his visit there with us in a previous post.  Note:  It may be difficult to visit the volcano and the temple in one day.
We invite you to encounter this monumental experience just hours from Pátzcuaro.  An unforgettable way to spend a day!
