Designation of Lake Patzcuaro as Ramsar Site Promotes Its Recovery

The City Council of Pátzcuaro, seeking the reclamation of Lake Pátzcuaro, recently made the official request that it be designated as a “Ramsar Site;” as part of the National World Wetlands Day event that was commemorated this year in Pátzcuaro on February 2.
Lake Pátzcuaro is a Natural Heritage of Mexico, which has a great cultural significance; in addition to its importance in the historical event of Michoacán.

Its recovery is important to everyone, so knowing a little more about it is important, as well as understanding the collaboration at the Federal, State, and Municipal levels, and the efforts of researchers of the Michoacana University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo are taking together.
What is a “Ramsar Site”?
According to the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas, a Ramsar Site is a wetland of International Importance.
"Wetlands are areas where water is the main factor of controlling the environment, as well as vegetation and associated fauna. They represent strategic ecosystems of great importance to the biodiversity and well-being of human communities, so it is necessary to take actions to ensure the maintenance of their ecological characteristics."
In Mexico, we have 142 such sites, and one of them is an area of the municipality of Erongarícuaro, which represents 8 percent of Lake Pátzcuaro, so they are now looking to expand the coverage to the entire lake as a Ramsar Site.
