One of the principal attractions in Michoacán is its artisan ware which, together with our countless natural resources and cultural richness and exquisite cuisine, makes our area one of the best vacation destinations in Mexico.

Below, we share with you some wait in which, by buying artisan ware, you contribute to the preservation of an art form that is also an integral part of the character of our communities and Mexican culture, and is also, simply, a way of supporting many, many families.

1.  Artisan ware have typically been handed down for generations, many going back to before the arrival of the Spaniards.

2.  Artisan ware is part of the identity of the people of our region, an example of the cultural richness of the indigenous Purépecha, a cultural heritage of their ancestors.

4.  It is obviously important for the artisans to move their products in a sustainable way.
A large number of families in our region support themselves through artisan ware (self-employed) and generate employment for other families, as well.

Family income from the artisan ware is, needless to say, principally from tourists.  Sadly, if the family is unable to sell its product(s), the family may abandon the craft and search for other alternatives.

5.  Buying local artisan ware contributes enormously to the local economy and helps to preserve this trade.  Plus, you are taking home a genuine, traditional artisan piece that doesn’t only look nice, but in most cases can be put to daily use.
