The Night of the Dead Pátzcuaro Artisan Competition is an important activity that takes place every year at this time in our magical village. It’s one of the must-do/must-see events of our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe.

The Institute of Artisans, a State government entity, uses this event to showcase the very best Michoacán artists, and their very best creations of folk art. The craftsmen and craftswomen can enter up to two pieces, made with traditional techniques and materials.

The competition is held at the Centro Cultural Antiguo Colegio Jesuita, just up the street from Mansión Iturbe.  People come to admire and buy these important “best-of-the-best” pieces of Michoacán artisans. In this space we will find the various crafts of Michoacán, including burnished, painted, and glazed pottery, natural fibers, lacquerware, carved cantera stone, carved wooden furniture, copper and silver jewelry, miniatures, clothing, shawls, embroidery, toys, feather work, and guitars and harps.

These prize-winning pieces – even those bought early on – must remain on exhibit for a full week, at which time the buyers may collect their purchases.

While it’s true that the finest pieces are found at the formal Artisan Competition, pieces of similar quality can be found during the same time at the Artisan Expo in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga (“Plaza Grande”).  An important advantage of shopping at the Expo is that the buyer can buy and carry away the purchases at one time without having to wait that interminable week!

Artisans anticipate this event for months. Many of the handcrafted pieces take weeks and even months to create. The Artisan Expo is our opportunity to buy directly from the artisans and promote fair trade.
