How to Generate Less Plastic when Traveling
Today we face different
threats to the environment that endanger biodiversity and ecosystems, which are
vital to our lives and tackling climate change.
Pollution is a danger
to the environment, and one of the major pollutants is plastic because it
causes alterations in the environment.
In the case of Pátzcuaro,
pollution has a great impact for the Lake Pátzcuaro basin, so it is
important to be aware of this situation, and do whatever we can to reduce or
eliminate the use of plastics.

Pátzcuaro was the first municipality of Michoacán to prohibit the use of a single-use plastics. We invite you to join in and support the measures that have been implemented in public places and in the different establishments seeking to achieve a healthy environment.
By being more aware of
our actions, we can show ourselves to be more environmentally conscious and
concerned, and you will be able to travel in a sustainable and responsible way.

Here we share some
actions that can help reduce the use of plastic when you travel.
1. Travel with a
reusable beverage containers. At Hotel Mansión Iturbe, looking to
support this initiative, we have already removed water bottles in the rooms and
have installed water dispensers.
2. Carry a reusable bag
at all times. You
never know when you will come across something you want and don’t have a way to
carry it except in a bag. Consider buying a sturdy bag made
with materials from the region to tote your purchases.

This accomplishes two
things: (1) You support local people with the purchase of the bag, and (2) you
generate less waste. You can say, “No, I don’t need a plastic bag,” when you
buy something. Many of us remember when plastic didn’t even exist. Keep
that in mind at all times.
3. “Just say no”
to straws. How long have plastic straws been around? They’re really
not necessary. If you find it indispensable, ask for a paper straw, or carry a
reusable one. “But it’s just a little straw,” you say. But multiply
that little straw by hundreds and thousands and…. Well, you get the idea.
4. Travel with
your own personal cleaning kit just in case you have little accident
with a spilled soda or something in your car, etc.
5. Do not use
disposable or Styrofoam containers. Styrofoam is an incredibly long
period of degradation. If you go out to eat, carry a reusable container in your
nifty bag, if you think you might bring some food home with you. In the
alternative, your restaurant will hopefully be able to provide biodegradable
containers.

Starting with these
five actions, we can support the environmental measures that are currently
being carried out on our planet and locally toward protecting our Lake Pátzcuaro basin.
