Michoacán has six World Heritage Sites: the Historic Center of Morelia, the Night of the Dead tradition, La Pirekua (indigenous song), Traditional Mexican Cuisine, “el Paradigma Michoacana” (Michoacan traditional cuisine), the Biosphere Reserve of the Monarch Butterfly, and the Voladores of San Pedro.

The Voladores of San Pedro Tarímbaro are less well known than other voladores we have in Mexico, such as the Papantla Voladores in Veracruz, Cuetzalan in Puebla, or Tamaletom in San Luis Potosí.
(All of them Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity.)

The festival of St. Peter the Apostle is celebrated in San Pedro Tarímbaro on June 29, and the following Sunday is the day of the indigenous rite of the Voladores of San Pedro Tarímbaro. These festivities demonstrate the fusion of the Catholic Church with the ancient customs of the original peoples (in this case the Mazahua ethnic group).

This ancient rite involves five people touting their courage and dexterity. The first individual positions himself atop a very tall vertical log (volantín) firmly placed in the ground.  He plays a flute and a drum as a ceremonial offering to the sun.  The four voladores representing the four cardinal points, as well as the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air, are lowered, suspended, and the rotate around the log suspended by the legs, meanwhile imploring St. Peter and the Sun God for good rains for their crops.

The Voladores of San Pedro Tarímbaro
are dressed in trousers and red vests, white shirts, with colorful ribbons and a kind of multicolored beret. Dressed in this way, they emulate the woodpecker, which is considered the guardian of the forests.
