Let’s All Take Care of Lake Pátzcuaro and the Lake Area!

Upon visiting Lake Pátzcuaro and the lake region, you can enjoy lovely, natural landscapes with a tremendous biodiversity.  Of particular note are the woods, with a mix of pines, oaks, firs, grasslands, shrublands and other foliage.

Give yourself the opportunity to connect with the tranquil environment and the singing of birds.  Of course, depending on the time of year you visit, you will observe different seasonal birds.

On islands of Lake of Pátzcuaro, especially Yunuen and Uranden, you can observe herons. The hummingbirds also abound here. Tzintzuntzan, which means “Place of Hummingbirds,” is one of the most important communities in the Lake Region. Migratory species, like ducks, reach Mexico in winter.

However, this emblematic lake is in danger and severe damage has occurred in recent years due to things such as deforestation and erosion of the soil, an increase of water hyacinth, the excessive use of agrochemicals, and an increasing density of population in the surrounding area, resulting in the generation of waste and sewage.

We all have the responsibility of caring for the environment and preserving it for posterity. At Hotel Mansión Iturbe we recommend some of the thing you can do to be a responsible tourist and help rescue of the beautiful, historic Lake Pátzcuaro:

1.  When you visit the lake, don’t remove natural animal or plant species.

2.  If there is nowhere to discard your trash (candy wrappers, disposable cups, etc.), try to take it back with you and recycle/reuse/dispose of it properly.

3.  Especially avoid tossing anything into the lake.

5.  Conserve water.

6.  Wherever possible, avoid the use of plastic.
