Below are some points for being a responsible tourist.  Many are obvious, but bear repeating.

1. Plan your trip.  Research sightseeing options that will help you better understand the communities you visit.
Some examples of community-based tourism under the direction of the local indigenous are:
b) Alternative Tourism Center on the island of Yunuen, and
c) Ecotourism Center on the island of Pacanda.

3. Respect the norms of the communities and their customs. Be respectful, especially if you attend local celebrations. In the case of Night of the Dead, be aware that this tradition is a very personal one for the indigenous.

5. Enjoy regional gastronomy. Michoacán cuisine is a fusion of indigenous and Spanish cuisines. In and around Lake Pátzcuaro, your palate is in for a treat, thanks to traditional cooks who use ancestral techniques, and ancient ingredients like maize, beans, chile, tomato, cactus, and squash.

6 “Consume Local”: In our area, “tianguis” still take place here and there.  They are a legacy of the pre-Hispanic period, where one can barter with products of similar value.
