Our friend Adrew Carhartt shares with us his experience during his visit to the Island at Lake Patzcuaro:

Isla de Pacanda is by far the largest island in Lake Patzcuaro, but it has only about 400 residents, while the much smaller but much more famous Janitzio has approximately 2,000.

Pacanda is accessible from Muelle San Pedrito, just down the street from the Muelle Principal.  The trip takes about 45 minutes, passing the islands of Janitzio, Tecuena, and Yunuén.

As you cruise past Tecuena, you will see many little white dots in the trees.  They are nesting – and apparently happy – egrets.

There is a lagoon near the top of the island. It has been suggested that it was at the top of a volcano long ago, and thus is higher than Lake Patzcuaro itself.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!  There’s a lovely temple on the island.

Pacanda is much flatter than Janitzio, with its billion-and-one stairs, so a walking tour of the island is a snap.  The only up-hill challenge is a brief ascent from the embarcadero.  From then on, it’s as flat as a pancake.  Still, it may be a good idea to take a walking stick with you, since there are hardly any paved areas.

The cemetery is some distance from the church, visible in the distance to the right.

And what goes up must come down!  Fortunately, you have the choice of using a ramp or stairs.”

It is important to mention that, during the traditional Day of the Dead celebration, visiting the cementery of Pacanda Island is an excellent option that we recommend to our guest at Hotel Mansion Iturbe.
