The image purportedly possesses miraculous properties is venerated by thousands of faithful from every lake-side community.  Specifically, the community thanks Señor del Rescate, or Christ the Redeemer, for having saved their ancestors from a smallpox plague in the 18th Century, when people were dying from the disease.  But the veneration extends to other such instances, and also for good harvests.

Artisans take advantage of this gathering to sell their wares in the Olive Courtyard in front of the temples.  Shopping in the shade of 500-year-old olive trees – what an awesome atmosphere!  In addition to selling products directly to the public, there is also an artisan’s competition, where you will see the best of the best.
