The Miraculous Lord of the Third Order in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán
The image of the Lord of the Third Order is one of the most venerated images in
Pátzcuaro. People from all over Mexico – and indeed from different parts
of the world – come to pay homage to him.
This image is located in the San Francisco Temple in Pátzcuaro, located a short distance from our Hotel Mansion Iturbe, on the corner of Teran and Federico Tena streets, just catty corner from San Francisco square where pottery market takes place every Friday.
On July 21, 1656, miraculous movements of the
crucified Christ were observed, leaning as we see it today hanging on the
cross. These movements were documented at that time, witnessed by the Mayor of Pátzcuaro Don José Diego de Bracamontes,
Davila, the Lieutenant General of the Province, Don Antonio Cortes de Heredia,
the Father Guardian of the San Francisco Convent Fray Luis Baños, as well as
the Father Fray Pedro de Sanda of the Order of San Agustín.
That day of that miracle, the temple bells
began to toll without anyone touching them, and the Catholic faithful who
attended the Temple of San Francisco witnessed the miraculous event. The priest
Don Agustín Arévalo from Santa Clara was sent to Patzcuaro by the Lord Bishop of Michoacán Fray Marcos Ramírez del
Pardo and Ovando, and he listened to the witnesses and certify the miracle.
During Holy Week in Pátzcuaro, on Saturday, the Procession of Silence is observed through the main streets of the historic center of Pátzcuaro. This solemn procession of various figures of Christ is organized by the Brotherhood of the Masked Men of the Third Order. This important event begins and ends at the Temple of San Francisco.
The image of the Lord of the Third Order was created in the 16th century by indigenous using the “pasta de caña” (cornstalk paste); which is ancestral technique of the Purepechas that wowed the evangelists for its lightness. Other images have been made using this technique, including the Virgen de la Salud ofPatzcuaro, Virgen de Zapopan, Virgen de Zapopan, the Señor de las Aguas de la Catedral de Guadalajara, the Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos, the Señor del Veneno en la Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City, and the Señor del Cacao, also in the Cathedral.

So, every year the festivals of the Lord of the Third Order are held on
July 21 to commemorate the miraculous events. On this date, the indigenous
community of Lake Pátzcuaro have a
special mass held in Purépecha. This image is the second most worshipped image
in our area, after our Virgin de la Salud in the basílica.
