Fatima’s Shrine, Tacámbaro, Michoacán
Fatima’s Shrine in Tacámbaro is a place we
always recommend that our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe visit, if they are interested in investigating religious sites in Mexico.
Of course, faithful Catholics come to our Magical Town to visit the Basilica of OurLady of Health in Pátzcuaro. This image of the Virgin is adored not only by countless people in our State of Michoacán, but by people from all over Mexico and even from other countries.
Many people are surprised to find a place like Fatima’s Shrine in remote Little Tacámbaro. There you will find the so-called “Refugee Virgins,” which arrived thence from such diverse origins as Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, and Cuba. And learning a little about the history of this Shrine will help you appreciate this religious landmark.
Construction of the building began in 1952 – quite a “youngster” for churches in this area – under the auspices of the Eugenio Díaz Barriga Presbytery. The Shrine was dedicated to the Rosary Virgin of Fatima (Portugal) as an homage. It was consecrated October 26, 1967.
The image of the Virgin of Fatima, located in the Shrine, is a replica of the original, made by the same artist José Ferreira Thedim. It measures 1.1 meters and is made of Brazilian cedar.
On the main altar you will find the Christ painted by the Hungarian artist Vilmos Szots, and to the sides you will see the Mysteries of the Rosary. At the blessing ceremony in 1974, members of the Polish Community in Mexico participated, as did the embassies of Poland and Hungary.
So! How did the Refugee Virgins end up in Tacámbaro? To escape ongoing Catholic persecution in Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, and Cuba.
The images of the Virgins of Lithuania and Cuba came to Tacámbaro in 1961, and the Virgin of Hungary in 1966.

But wait! There’s more! In the basement of Fatima’s Shrine, you will find a replica of the Holy Sepulchre. You will cross a narrow stone corridor that leads to were Jesus prayed in the garden. There lies Jesus. In the same vicinity, you will also see paintings from the 19th Century.
You can’t miss the cantera monument of the Martyrs of Christ the King in the exterior of the church. Wrapping up your visit, don’t miss the spectacular view from the Shrine’s staircase, where you will see the gorgeous natural surroundings of this Magical Town, Tacámbaro, known as the Balcony of the Warm Earth.

Tacámbaro, another Magical
Town, is a scant 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Patzcuaro. It’s a lovely
area surrounded by natural landscapes, including the Laguna de la Magdalena, and the Ecological Park of Cerro Hueco.

picturesque setting, among many attractions of the area, you will find Fatima’s Shrine. It’s

The Black Madonna of Chenstojova, by the
artist Miguel Baquidano, was brought from Poland by Jerzy Skoryna and Melchor
Fryszriewicz on October 20, 1957. This
Virgin was sent to Tacámbaro in
gratitude for the prayers that were offered for the liberation of Poland during
the Second World War, and also for the Prime Cardenal Stefan Wysznski of
Poland, emprisoned by the communist regime.
