Members
of the large indigenous (Purépecha) community arrive on their pilgrimage from
different coastal towns and the islands of the Lake Pátzcuaro, to show their fervor to the Virgen in the Basilica, where they can hear a mass in their
native language.

This
image so venerated dates from the 16th century, it was commissioned by Don Vasco de Quiroga in 1536 and formed
from corn stalk pulp by the
Purépecha. This pre-Hispanic technique involves grinding dry corn stalk, mixing it with bone marrow,
and adding a paste obtained from bulbs of the orchids, producing resilient
figures that last for more than five hundred years.

This image
of the Virgen María was consecrated and appointed patron of
health. It was first placed in the Hospital of Santa Martha. It was
proclaimed as patroness of Pátzcuaro
in 1737.
In 1880, the Virgen was moved to the Sagrario, where she remained for 191 years, when she was
installed at the Basilica in Pátzcuaro.
On December 8, 1899, the Virgen’s “coronation by decree” was
directed by Pope León XIII. Since then, this has been the day when the Virgen de la Salud is celebrated
in Pátzcuaro.
The Virgen makes a tour through the main streets of Pátzcuaro on this day. Houses are
decorated in white and blue. Iturbe Street is festively adorned with a
carpet of colored sawdust, and thus the Virgen
de la Salud makes her grand entrance into the Plaza Vasco de
Quiroga.
