Two important processions take place in the Historic District of our Magical Town during Holy Week in Patzcuaro:  The Procession of the Christs, and the Procession in Silence.

During these processions, Patzcuaro is invaded by an atmosphere of mysticism and solemnness.  We suggest that you scan the area ahead of time for the best vantage point from which to watch the processions, and try to get there in plenty of time to make sure your place hasn’t been seized!  This way, you won’t have to scramble to find a lookout, and you will be able to watch the processions in a calm and respectful manner which this important celebration merits.



Christs Procession in Pátzcuaro during the Holy Week in Mexico

The Procession of the Christs begins on Good Friday at 7:00 p.m., at the Basílica.  Various outlying areas and nearby communities participate with some of their most treasured images of Christ made of "pasta de caña" (Corn Stalk Paste, or j’atzingueni in Purépecha), which was one of the first manifestations of Spanish/indigenous art dating from the 16th century.

The Procession of Silence is held “Easter Saturday” at 6:30 p.m. is a major tradition in our Magical Town.  Organized by the Brotherhood of the Hooded Ones of the Third Order of the San Francisco Temple, this procession begins and ends at the San Francisco Temple.
