Celebration of Corpus Christi (Body of Christ) in Pátzcuaro
Among the many religious festivities that are celebrated in Mexico, we find Corpus Chirsti, also known as "The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ." A festival that dates back to the Middle Ages, it has its origin in the thirteenth century in Europe, in the city of Leija in Belgium.
The date of Corpus Thursday is not fixed; it
is determined as 60 days after Easter Sunday, to remember the Body and Blood of
Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament.
In Michoacán, the indigenous Purépecha
communities already carried out a festival during this time, praying for good
rains for planting, appreciating the abundance, expressing thanks for the
favors that were received during the year, asking for sustenance in the next
year. The evangelists simply added Corps Cristi to the celebration, and it
stuck!
In Michoacán it is celebrated with variants in the different towns, most commonly accompanied by band music as the participants walk the streets of their communities in procession. It is a very joyful festivity in which the enthusiastic people of the community tossing fruit and other products such as corn, or even in some places small pieces of miniature craftsmanship.
