1. It’s located in the northern part of the State
of Michoacán.
2. Pátzcuaro's altitude is 2,140
meters (7,000 feet) above sea level.
3.- Pátzcuaro's name from long, long ago was “Petatzécuaro”
4.- "The door to heaven" is one of the meanings
given to Pátzcuaro. "Place where
the gods ascend and descend" is another meaning given by historians.
5. The indigenous
Chichimeca chieftains Paracume and Vapeani first settled in what is now Pátzcuaro, which was the
neighborhood of Tarimichundiro (Pazquaro).
6. The ancient capital of "Mechuacan" was Tzintzuntzan,
and it was Don Vasco de Quiroga who moved the capital of the province of
Michoacán to Pátzcuaro in 1538.
7. A peculiarity of
the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga (the main plaza) is that you will not find a
religious building around it, as is typical in other such communities.

8. In 1540, Don Vasco de Quiroga commissioned Purépecha (indigenous, who arrived after the Chichimecas) artists to create the
image of the Virgin of Health of Pátzcuaro (now in our famous BasÍlica) using their ancestral technique, pasta de caña (cane paste).
9. The first college
in America was founded in Pátzcuaro in the sixteenth century. It was then called the Royal College of
San Nicolas Obispo, which, by means of a royal decree in 1543, King Charles
I of Spain, took responsibility.
10. The BasÍlica of Our Lady (the Virgin) of Health of Pátzcuaro was originally projected
to have five naves and be known as the Cathedral of San Salvador.
11. The mortal remains
of Don Vasco de Quiroga are deposited in a mausoleum in the BasÍlica.

12. In 1579, the name “cathedral” was transferred from Pátzcuaro to the main church in
the Capital of Michoacán (New Valladolid, which
today is Morelia).
13. In the eighteenth
century, Pátzcuaro became a principal commercial center, through which
the muleteers transferred merchandise from the Galéon de Manila, recently
arrived in Acapulco from Manila. Don Francisco de Iturbe y Heriz was
the administrator of the Royal Customs House in Pátzcuaro.
14. During Pátzcuaro’s independence, Pátzcuaro
had important characters, such as Padre Manuel de la Torre Lloreda,
heroine of the Independence Doña Gertrudis Bocanegra, and Don José
María de Abarca y Monasterio, who was known as a principal participant of the Conspiracy of Valladolid in 1809. He
lived in what today is the Iturbe Mansion Hotel. Google these famous names and you will learn
