Celebrating Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro
Night of the Dead (Noche de
Muertos) is commonly celebrated the night of November 1, while Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is the
day after.

Day of the Dead in Pátzcuaro and in the Lake region is one of the most
representative of Michoacan’s cultural expressions, when the indigenous
Purépechas honor their dearly beloved with deep respect and solemnity.

This is a reunion with the

Each community celebrates this
event with its own variations on the theme, following rules that have remained
for generations.

Among the spectra, we can find
some communities that are more reserved, with a small altar in the homes, while others carry out big parties for those
who died that year and are returning for the first time.

Other communities wait in the
cemetery decorating the graves with bright orange marigolds, a cross, candles,
etc. Offerings of fruit, vegetables,
bread, sugar skulls are also made.
In addition, colorful embroidered napkins are placed around, as is food that
was the favorites of the deceased, as well as ceramics, and personal objects.
Marigolds and candles show the way for the deceased to the offering. Water
should also be offered, as the deceased come to the celebration, quite thirsty
after their journey.

A significant variation
between communities is the time that lapses. Some last all night, others early
in the morning, or during the day.
