Quiroga: Artisanship, Cuisine, and History
Quiroga is a town on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro. It is known
mostly for its artisanship and cuisine.
In our region there are multiple options
to buy crafts, according to your tastes and budgets. At Hotel Mansión Iturbe, we show you the different options so you can
create your own plan.
If you want to buy handicrafts at
wholesale prices, an important craft center to visit is the good-sized town of Quiroga. You can easily
combine that with a visit to the nearby, much smaller historic town of Santa Fe de la Laguna, where you will
find great artists of folk art.
Main square of Quiroga, Michoacan |
This bustling town is not only a great
commercial hub, it is also rich in history. It was the first settlement of the
conquest, which took place between 1593 and 1598. Initially it was called San
Diego Cocupao. Close by, Don Vasco de Quiroga founded the village of Uayameo, also on the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro. Don Vasco established
the People’s Hospital in the village of Santa Fe de la Laguna, the Hospital de la Concepción in Cocupao, and the
Franciscan convent of San Diego.
Give yourself time to navigate the
multiple outlets where, at first glance, it might appear stores are selling the
same things. But it is not so. Dig deep enough and you
will find just what you were looking for.
Wooden toys for infants: Mexican Handicrafts |
If it’s wood crafts, you will find an
infinite variety of wooden toys for infants to young adults, decorating aids,
even furniture. Quiroga
is also a mecca for wholesale artificial flowers and quality leather goods,
like belts and handbags.
Beautiful and colorful embroidery also
abounds.

An important holiday in Quiroga is celebrated the first Sunday
of July, the Feast of the Precious Blood of Christ. The locals – and pilgrims
from other parts all over Mexico – turn out enthusiastically for this event.
This festival is dedicated to the huge Christ made of cane paste dating back to
the 16th century.

Gastronomy is another important attraction of Quiroga, known as the World Capital of Carnitas (delicious pork). You can either buy it from vendors in the main square, or relax at a restaurant in around the main square. Other delicacies available are pozole, traditional corundas, and lots of sweets and artisan bread.
