One part that distinguishes Patzcuaro
is its main square, the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, also known by
local people as the Plaza Grande. One of the largest squares in Mexico
and recognized as one of the most beautiful in America with huge trees, it is
surrounded by colonial houses with tile roofs where we can clearly observe a
harmony among all the houses painted with the same color scheme, and following
various guidelines that create a sense of homogeneity.

One such building is our Hotel Mansión Iturbe, located right in front of the famous statue of Don Vasco de Quiroga. During the Christmas season, the entire plaza is the
scene of the Nativity and everything, all made by local artisans, that
represent this momentous event.

The different artisanal regions of Michoacán,
are represented so you can observe their craft techniques, as well as
representative characters of each of these regions.
For example, the traditional “viejitos” (dancers) of the Lake Pátzcuaro region are represented, as are the Tlahualiles of Sahuayo with their striking clothing, and the famous monarch butterflies.

Without a doubt, some of the favorite
characters of the Nativity picture are the Magi, highlighting a striking camel
and enormous elephant made with vegetable fibers from Lake Pátzcuaro.
