On the trail of the Monarch Butterfly

On the trail of the Monarch Butterfly is a fascinating show that runs through October 17 in Morelia’s Centro Comercial Espacio las Américas. It marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Canada.

Images show Mexican pilot Francisco Gutiérrez in a hand glider, decorated to resemble a Monarch butterfly. The glider carries the name “Papalotzin,” mythical Royal Butterfly of the Aztecs.  Gutiérrez flew the 6,000 kilometers from Canada to Central Mexico in 72 days (4 generations of butterflies), spending a total of 90 hours in the sky.

The exhibition, a joint venture of the Mexican and Canadian governments, comprises forty-three images taken during this journey. It is all in an attempt to promote the conservation of the monarch butterflies’ habitat and their phenomenal annual migration, unique in the natural world.

The Monarch butterfly migration commences in Canada in early November. “La Reserva de la Biosfera Mariposa Monarca” in our state of Michoacán shares the distinction of being the butterflies’ final destination. The Reserve encompasses 56,000 protected hectares (138,000 acres) on the border of the states of Michoacán and Mexico. The Reserve was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries, which are part of the Reserve, is a favorite winter destination of our visitors to Hotel Mansion Iturbe. If they arrive from the Pacific side (Ixtapa, etc.), they can enjoy the beach and the surf, proceed to Hotel Mansion Iturbe, relax there, and continue on to see the Monarchs.

Those arriving from Mexico City can explore that great city, go eastward to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, and double back to Patzcuaro – approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles)

Monarch butterflies actually congregate at several different locations on the reserve.  El Santuario del Rosario is the most popular.  It's a spectacular setting, but bear in mind that, once there, you still have to walk 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) to get to where the butterflies are.

We recommend you check out the Espacio las Américas in Morelia and enjoy this interesting exposition, “Viaje de la Mariposa Monarca”, which will make you appreciate this migratory phenomenon even more.
