Artisan Toys in Patzcuaro and the Lacustrine Region
Artisan toys are an important part of our folk art. Our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe are constantly asking us where we can find these things in our area.
Various toys
of different materials were already being made in pre-Hispanic times, but
interestingly the craft really blossomed in the Colonial Era when the toys
became tools of the evangelists for their work. We can still see this
association during important religious celebrations, such as Day of the Dead, and the Christmas
tradition of Joseph and Mary going from door to door with their newborn Jesus
looking for a place to spend the night.
You will find
a wide variety of traditional Mexican
toys almost wherever you go in Pátzcuaro
and the Lacustrine Region. Spinning tops, cup-and-ball, rattles, puppets, yoyos,
wooden boxers, stick horses, model cars and trains and airplanes and boats that
you can paint and introduce them into your miniature gardens.
You can find a
large selection of artisan toys in Patzcuaro
at Casa de los Once Patios, and Palacio de Huitzimengari, just down the Street
from Mansion Iturbe.
And of course
there are always the yearly Artisan Fairs of Night of the Dead or Holy Week, when artisans from all over
Michoacan congregate to Patzcuaro with a huge menagerie of artisan ware,
including these toys.
There are other
towns and villages near Patzcuaro
that offer such things year ‘round. Tzintzuntzan
is good place to find toys and Christmas ornaments of straw, corn husk, etc.). Quiroga
has many stores with wooden figures and toys. The island of Janitzio, not surprisingly, produces
models of their famous fishing boats. Santa Fe de la Laguna is known for, among other things, their miniature cooking
utensils.
Paracho, famous primarily for its exquisite guitars, is also
a destination for traditional Mexican
toys. Although not in the Lacustrine Region, it is worth the trip.
Help preserve Mexican folk culture by supporting
these artisans, and keep alive this
fascinating art, which is part of our identity.
Patzcuaro and the Lacustrine Region is a shopper’s Paradise,
and one that even the children will absolutely love! Enjoy your next trip to Pátzcuaro!
