Mansion Iturbe: A 1540 Landmark at the Heart of Pátzcuaro’s History
Many of our guests ask about the history of Mansión Iturbe. Our house holds a long and fascinating story. While we often share details during your stay, today we want to tell you about the very beginning of this special place.
The history of the site occupied by Mansión Iturbe begins at the same
time as the city itself. In his book Pátzcuaro visto desde la Mansión Iturbe,
the architect and historian Dr. José Manuel Martínez Aguilar traces the roots
of this property back to 1540. This pivotal year coincides with the first urban
layout of the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga.

What started as a simple structure of adobe and wood is now a preserved
jewel of Mexican history and architecture—a place we care for with great
pride.
Mansión Iturbe is much more than a building; it is a key piece in understanding how Pátzcuaro has changed over time. Dr. Esperanza Ramírez Romero, a highly respected expert on Michoacán architecture, highlights the importance of our house in her prologue to the book Pátzcuaro visto desde la Mansión Iturbe (Pátzcuaro seen from Mansión Iturbe).
She explains that in 1984, when she began her study of historic
buildings in the region, Mansión Iturbe immediately caught her eye. For
her, our location and the monumental Baroque entrance facing the Plaza Grande
are in perfect harmony with the town. Because of this, she decided that her
official list of Mexico’s cultural treasures should begin right here, at
Mansión Iturbe.
After more than 50 years as a historic hotel in Mexico, Mansión
Iturbe remains a natural part of the Plaza Grande. We are not a modern copy; we
are an authentic site with a soul of its own. Experts use our house as a guide
to explain the identity of this Pueblo Mágico.

roots.
