Festival of Corpus Christi in Patzcuaro
The
Festival of Corpus Christi, celebrated the Thursday after Holy Trinity, is an
important date on the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. It’s also an important celebration full of
tradition and vitality for the devout in the Magical Village of Patzcuaro.
Its history
goes back to the 13th Century in Lieja, Belgium when Pope Urbano IV was in the
Vatican (1261-1264). It was created to
emphasize the real presence of Jesus Christ in the celebration of the Holy
Eucharist.

Festival of Corpus Christi in Patzcuaro |
The
historic Council of Trent made it part of its agenda – among other important
ecumenical decisions – to promote the cause, which included a solemn and
reverent procession through the streets and other public places.

Citizens of
Patzcuaro and the other Lake Pátzcuaro villages celebrate the Festival of
Corpus Christi with much feeling and reverence with a procession through the
principal streets of Historic Downtown Patzcuaro. Hotel Mansion Iturbe has a strategically
located position from which to observe the procession, as it passes directly in
front.
The
indigenous community has celebrated Corpus Christi since the 16th century. They even have a name for it: Kuanikukua,
during which they give thanks to Mother Earth for past harvests, and ask for a
good harvest to come.
It is a
tradition in the Patzcuaro area to toss fruit, bread, and vegetables from their
windows to the pedestrians below as a way of showing their thanks for a “good
harvest,” and as a way of sharing their good fortune.

Corpus Christi with us in Patzcuaro, and get to know yet another local
tradition.
