Ucareo – “Oasis of Eastern Michoacán”

Our guests at Mansión Iturbe quickly become “regulars” at our very own Restaurante Doña Paca, where many patrons are introduced for the first time to the traditional liqueurs of Ucareo. Unfortunately, most of these people don’t have the chance to visit this picturesque village in eastern Mochoacán. But if they can squeeze in the trip, they will not be disappointed.

We find Ucareo just 60 kilometers (about 40 miles) from Morelia, near the city of Zinapécuaro. It is accessed either by the Autopista de Occidente, or the Morelia-Maravatío highway. Located in a cold and wooded area, Ucareo has a well-established fruit tradition that dates from the sixteenth century when the Augustinian evangelists arrived.

The principal fruits – plum, pear, and quince – are harvested and prepared for national and international markets.
The famous Pear Fair, held annually during the final days of July and into the first days of August, is an important cultural attraction where the locals can showcase their products in the most diverse ways. Pickled vegetables using recipes handed down from generation to generation are also highlighted.
Can’t make it for the Fair? There are other reasons to put Ucareo on your itinerary:

· The lovely parrish church, founded by the Augustinian monks in the sixteenth century, has been handsomely restored, and is tended with great care by the people of Ucareo.

· The village itself is the epitome of cleanliness, order, and tranquility, surrounded by robust vegetation, nestled among a blanket of hills.

· Close to the village we find geothermal sulfur hot springs.

If you don’t have time to visit the village of Ucareo during your stay at Mansión Iturbe, you can at least enjoy one of their famous products. If you DO have the time, however, we will be happy to arrange a trip to this lovely, mystical area of eastern Michoacan. Just ask! We’re at your service!
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our friend Father Faustino Aguilar for his 25 years of service to the community of Ucareo. We were recently there for the celebration in his honor, which was proudly hosted by the entire community and attended by friends from around the country.
