Mexican Traditions: The Moors of Tejaro in Patzcuaro

Pátzcuaro is a place to enjoy a wide variety of Mexican traditions.  At every turn, we are surprised by yet another long-standing tradition that we weren’t aware of.  From the very balconies of Mansión Iturbe, we can see many of those traditions and learn more about the everyday events of our community that go back a long time.

The Plaza is surrounded by huge, ancient trees, and is usually a place of tranquility.  But the Plaza is also a venue for many musical, dance, folkloric, artisan, and religious events.

We were recently surprised by a visit by the Moros de Tejaro (Moors of Tejaro), a indigineous community near Zacapu.  They had come as a part of a pilgrimage to honor the Virgen de la Salud de Pátzcuaro in the Basílica.

It was a cloudy morning in Pátzcuaro.  Breakfast was just finishing up in the Doña Paca Restaurant at Mansion Iturbe, when the typical band music started filtering in from the Plaza.  We could see the dancers who had come for their ritual ceremony, preceding the very Virgen de la Salud de Pátzcuaro in procession.

In a ceremony like this, there are plenty of blasts from fireworks and copal.  The participants, residents of Tejaro, bring their fervor, order, and solemnity to the ritual, dressed in their stunning Moorish attire.  From there, they continued their procession up to the Basílica.
