This year, people in the Mexican tourist industry saw a change in the traditional Tourist Fair:  for the first time, it was held in Puerto Vallarta (state of Jalisco) and Rivera Nayarit (state of Nayarit).                  We were able to chat with national and international people in the industry about the changes in the Fair.  It was agreed that such changes actually promote the diversity in the attractions that Mexico has to offer our diverse visitors.                 Without a doubt, Puerto Vallarta and Rivera Nayarit were most deserving hosts for this event.  They really went out of their way to make us feel most welcome.                 The hosts really knew what they were doing:  The inaugural event, held in the M...

      Our guests at Mansión Iturbe quickly become “regulars” at our very own Restaurante Doña Paca, where many patrons are introduced for the first time to the traditional liqueurs of Ucareo. Unfortunately, most of these people don’t have the chance to visit this picturesque village in eastern Mochoacán. But if they can squeeze in the trip, they will not be disappointed.         We find Ucareo just 60 kilometers (about 40 miles) from Morelia, near the city of Zinapécuaro. It is accessed either by the Autopista de Occidente, or the Morelia-Maravatío highway.        La mayoría de los huéspedes de Mansión Iturbe en Pátzcuaro, que degustan un licor tradicional de Ucareo en nuestro Restaurante Doña Paca, no han tenido aún la oportunidad de visitar este pintoresco pueblo en el Oriente de Michoacán y nos preguntan a cerca de éste lugar.             Ucareo se localiza en la parte alta del municipio de Zinapécuaro, a 60 de Morelia. Se puede llegar por la Autopista de Occidente o bien por la carretera Morelia-Maravatío. Se ubica en una zona fría y boscosa que por su clima tiene una añeja tradición frutícola que data del siglo XVI, cuando llegaron los Evangelizadores Agustinos a esta región.           Se cosechan diversas frutas, destacando la ciruela, el durazno y   el membrillo, entre otras frutillas que son comercializadas en el mercado nacional y en el extranjero.         ...

Deep in the Purépecha homeland of Charapan, we find the small community of Ocumicho, known for its fantastic and fanciful variations on the theme of the devil. These colorful clay figures are hand-made, and are pure mischief and imagination.   When you see one of these figures, you know beyond a shadow of doubt, “Ah! That’s from Ocumicho! No one else does it like this!” Over the years, the little demons of Ocumicho have evolved into a wildly popular piece of artisanware. They have become a particularly sought-after treasure at the famous Artisan Flea Market, held during the celebration of Night of the Dead in Pátzcuaro, and in the Palm Sunday and Holy Week events in Uruapan and Pátzcuaro. The Night of the Dead Artisan Flea Market in Pátzcuaro (around the last week of October and the first week of November) is held in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, right across the street from Hotel Mansión Iturbe.         Enclavado en la Meseta Purépecha en el municipio de Charapan, se localiza la comunidad de San Pedro Ocumicho conocido por sus famosos diablos. Figuras de barro llenas de colorido moldeadas por manos indígenas que realizan obras de arte llenas de colorido, picardía e imaginación.         Los Diablos de Ocumicho han ido evolucionando producto de la comercialización en las últimas décadas que gozan de gran aceptación por parte del Turismo que nos visita.
