Day of the Dead in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán

Day of the Dead in Mexico is one of the most deeply rooted events among Mexicans, and in Michoacán it is extra special, As Lake Pátzcuaro is  the  epicenter. For us in Michoacán Night of the Dead, the “feast of the souls,” is celebrated on November 1 and 2.  The epicenter of this celebration are the communities of the Pátzcuaro Lake region and one of the best known places there is undoubtedly the island of Janitzio.  But the vigil of the deceased can be seen in different communities, and each one has its special touch. Day of th Dead in Patzcuaro, Michoacan More than 30 communities celebrate the Night of the Dead in our Lake Pátzcuaro region .  Those communities include Arocutín, Cuanajo , Tzurumútaro, Ihuatzio , Tzintzuntzan , Santa Fe de la Laguna , Erongarícuaro, Jarácuaro , San José Uricho, and all five Islands of Lake Pátzcuaro : Janitzio , La Pacanda , Yunuen, Uranden, and La Tecuena. So take your time, and investigate which ones are of most interest for you to visit.

El Día de Muertos en México es una de las tradiciones más arraigadas entre los mexicanos y en Michoacán es muy especial, sobresaliendo la Región del Lago de Pátzcuaro . Para nosotros en Michoacán es Noche de Muertos , la fiesta de las Animas que se celebra el 1 y 2 de noviembre, el epicentro de esta celebración son las comunidades de la Región Lacustre y uno de los lugares más conocidos sin duda es Janitzio, pero la velación de los difuntos se puede apreciar en las diferentes comunidades y cada una tiene su toque especial. Pasta de Caña (“Corn Cane Paste”) Technique

The “Pasta de Caña” technique was used during the pre-Hispanic epoch by the original inhabitants of the Lake Pátzcuaro region to create their much adored idols and deities. The pasta de caña technique amazed the Spanish during their evangelization for its light weight, and they themselves started to use the same technique to create their own religious images . Religious Imagines made with the Corn Cane Paste Technique in Patzcuaro, Michoacan The foregoing is an example of the “melding” of cultures that occurred during that era.  The figures were made with the skills learned in Europe, but with the materials from the lake area and the very technique used by the Purépechas . As a result, different images began to be created, many of which were taken to Spain in the sixteenth century, and today we continue to find them in various parts of Spain. These “New Spain art” pieces, modeled in pasta de caña , were sent back to Spain unpainted, where they were later painted. Imagines made
