Princess Huanita was a young woman very
much in love with the Purépecha (indigenous) Tanganxoan, who was one of the
heirs of King Tariácuri. But the princess was kidnapped by the priest Candó,
who was away in the shrine of Cutzé, a stone yácata made by the Purépechas,
located on the Hill of the Cross. The princess wept so much for the
absence of her beloved that a spring with his tears was formed.

There are two principal types of trees that you will find in the Lago de Camécuaro National Park:
1. The ahuehuete, also known as
Sabino, in Nahuatl, means "old water tree." They reach between
18 and 20 meters in height. The ahuehuete was declared the National Tree of
Mexico in 1921.
It is estimated that there are around 500
ahuehuetes in the National Park, and with the impressive size of several of
these trees, you can only guess how old they must be.
2. The weeping actually attracts
lightning, so if it starts to rain during your visit, better stay away from
them!
In Lake Camécuaro you can spot a
variety of ducks. A variety of birds frequent the area, and the lake contains a
wide assortment of fish, often visible with the crystal-clear waters.
