Palm Sunday Artisan Fair in Uruapan 2015

The Palm Sunday Artisan Fair in Uruapan is the largest such event in Latin America, drawing 1,300 artisans – including Purépecha, Mazahua, Nahua, and Otomí ethnic groups – from all over Michoacan.  It is a favorite event of our guests at Hotel Mansion Iturbe.  This year it takes place from March 28 to April 12, during which time cultural, artistic, and gastronomic activities will be highlighted.

This important event takes place in downtown Uruapan in the “Mártires de Uruapan” and “Morelos”  squares and the Huatapera Museum. There will be an extension on Ocampo Street, to one side of the Casa de la Cultura.

March 28:  Traditional Michoacan Food Expo in La Plaza de la Ranita.  There you will find the best churipo, nacatamales, atole de grano, atapakuas, uchepos, and corundas, among other delicacies.

Starting at 10:00 a.m.  Parade of artisans, starting in front of the National Park and ending up downtown Uruapan.

March 29:  Traditional Michoacan Ceremony and Dance Competition in the Huatapera Museum.  State Competition of Artisans, Palm Sunday, in the Casa de la Cultura.  Buyers and collectors of Mexican Folk Art from far and wide are attracted by the high-quality pieces to be found.  These items will be available for purchase after the competition itself, through April 6th.

7:00 p.m.  Catwalk of traditional shawls,  at the “Plazoleta de Acceso al Parque Nacional”.

Make time to visit the Huatapera, and see the women weavers using techniques handed down from pre-Hispanic times.
