This traditional Artisan Expo is an event that takes place annually at Uruapan, also referred to as La Perla del Cupatitzio (the Pearl of Cupatitzio).  This is an important event for lovers of Mexican Folk Art, which showcases the many different cultural expressions of the indigenous people of Michoacán.

Date for this year:  April 8-23.  Venue: downtown Uruapan (Plaza Morelos and Plaza Mártires de Uruapan). Around 1,200 craftsmen from all over the state of Michoacán are expected. More than a million pieces of handicrafts will go on sale, much to the delight of fans of this ilk.

Michoacán artisans represent approximately 47 communities of ethnic Nahua, Purhépecha, Mazahua, and Otomi groups. Crafts are made from different materials such as: wood, clay, fiber, copper, among others. Textile crafts such as embroidery and cross stitch are also popular, not to mention the traditional shawls and coats.

It is important to mention that this expo is carried out for two full weeks. However, the craft competition this year will be held on 8 and 9 April at the Casa de la Cultura de Uruapan, opposite the artisan Expo. The finest examples of artisanware will be found there.

For this competition, it is estimated 3,000 pieces of handicrafts will be displayed. Get ready to see an explosion of color and creativity!

This expo is considered the most important of its kind in Latin America, and this year will also include 40 cultural events emphasizing the typical clothing contest, Purépecha food, and Aguadoras parade. One more reason to visit Uruapan during this time!

Enjoy Holy Week in Pátzcuaro and downtown Uruapan!  (And remember, the famous National Park is just a hop, skip, and a jump from downtown Uruapan!  If you haven't visit the National Park, it's a must-see.)
