Day of the Dead celebration in Patzcuaro, Michoacan

During Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro 2013, we had a new treat:  In addition to the traditional Day of the Dead Artisan Faire, we enjoyed a lovely, colorful trimming of the grounds in keeping with the festivities.

An enormous ofrenda (memorial) in honor of Don Vasco deQuiroga was erected in the Plaza.  Not only was it beautiful – it also happened to contained different elements that make up the traditional ofrenda in Purepecha communities.

Countless marigolds adorned the various fountains in the majestic Plaza Vasco de Quiroga just in front of Hotel Mansion Iturbe.

Even the canoes of Lake Patzcuaro were draped in marigolds and another traditional flower – flor de nube (cloud flower).  Shutter bugs had a hay day on Lake Patzcuaro.

As usual, the Day of the Dead Artisan Faire in Patzcuaro continued to draw very large crowds of visitors.  An “extension” of the Artisan Faire was set up at the Ex Colegio Jesuita right up the street (across from the Museum).
