The National Copper Museum in Santa Clara del Cobre is a must-do/must-see!

We strongly recommend that you put Santa Clara del Cobre – and specifically the National Copper Museum in that Pueblo Mágico – on your list of destinations the next time you visit to Pátzcuaro. It’s a scant 40 minutes from Pátzcuaro. Almost everyone who visits Pátzcuaro has Santa Clara del Cobre on their list of nearby places to visit and shop. (By the way, “cobre” is the Spanish word for copper – DUH!)

In the National Copper Museum you will find examples of the best of the best; that is, examples of renowned winners of various artisan competitions. And in the surrounding shops and foundries in the town, you will find a huge variety of items of similar quality. Copper candelabras, copper bathtubs, copper sinks, copper jewelry, copper bells, copper trinkets – you name it! There are several good restaurants overlooking the main plaza if you feel like taking a break from browsing.

Copperwork has been handed down from generation to generation in Santa Clara del Cobre. They know what they are doing. In the Museum and in other foundries in town, you can see, among other things, the synchrony of four or five men hammering way, each in turn, at a single piece of copper. Pretty amazing.

If you get the chance, visit the churches at the bottom of the hill. There is some exquisite copperwork there, as well.

If you don’t visit Santa Clara del Cobre on your next visit, you will regret it. Just ask anyone else who has been here before! There’s nothing like it.
