The Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo has had a feather art workshop in Morelia since 1995. The “Nicolaitas” Group dates from 2006, and was then led by Martha Leticia López Luna. Since then, this dedicated group of artists has preserved the important heritage of the feather art in Michoacan.

Feather art, an indigenous cultural medium, dates back to pre-Hispanic times. The clothing used by the priests and rulers were decorated with feathers, indicating hierarchy.

The Spanish conquistadors were amazed to find such beauty and refinement in the garb of the priests and rulers, as well as that of their gods. Feather art altered the general conception of art, making it a revealing part of the culture.

During the viceroyalty of New Spain, feather art was concentrated in objects of religious worship. The evangelists took these feather techniques to create pieces that would facilitate the catechization of the indigenous. The indigenous artists implanted their technique into Franciscan and Augustinian images to “connect” the evangelization.

The feather workers of Michoacan were quickly distinguished; they are even referenced in the Relación de Michoacán or “Chronicleof Michoacán”, as well as chronicles of travelers and accounts of reporters who wrote about this artistic expression, and the abilities of the Purépecha to create it.
