The principal, not-to-miss event in Mexico
for folk art lovers is the Night of the Dead Artisan Tianguis (market) in
Pátzcuaro. It is held in the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, right in front
of our Hotel Mansión Iturbe.

Artisans from different regions of
Michoacán attend this great event. For those of us who have the opportunity to
be attend it every year, it is a pleasure to greet the now-familiar
craftspeople from all over the State of Michoacán.

Clay handicrafts made with different techniques such as
burnished clay, glazed, polychrome, etc., are made with great finesse. You
will find a great diversity from the famous glazed pineapples to a wide
range of tableware. In Michoacán, each town works
differently and has its own particular techniques inherited from pre-Hispanic times
and perfected at the time of the evangelization by Don Vasco de Quiroga. Regular visitors can glance at a certain
collection of artwork and say, “Beautiful pieces from Santa Fe de la Laguna,”
or “Look at those fabulous pineapples from San José de Gracia!”

Handicrafts made with vegetable fibers are also very varied. Those of tule or panikua
(wheat straw) are among the most popular. “Chuspata”
is a favorite technique; it involves shaping something with iron and then
wrapping it with the fiber. The
Lake Region is distinguished by this type of handicrafts, though other regions
of Michoacán produce beautiful variations on the theme.

Molcajetes (the familiar
kitchen utensil used to grind spices and sauces) from
San Nicolás Obispo, wood furniture from Cuanajo or masks from Tocuaro
will keep you surprised and
delighted at every turn.

If you looking
for textiles. you
will be fascinated by the fine rebozos (shawls) of Ahuirán, and the intricate stories embroidered by the craftswomen of the
community of Santa Cruz. Embroidery
is practiced almost everywhere, each with its own slant on daily life.
