So what is so special about Day of the Dead in Pátzcuaro?
Year after year
the indigenous (Purepecha) community takes it time to carry out
this important ritual of the “Night of the Souls,” during which
the dead return and live with their loved ones, however briefly, on this
emotional and significant date.
Candles and the ubiquitous “cempasúchil
flowers,” (marigolds) are everywhere. The aroma of a special incense of
the season spreads throughout the cemetery.
The cempásuchil
flower symbolizes the Day of the Dead in Mexico, its color in
pre-Hispanic times was associated with the sun.

You will
see that people bring food and objects that the deceased liked
in life (e.g., playing cards, dominoes, cigars, etc., among favorite
foods). Offerings and altars in each community of the Pátzcuaro Lake Region, are based on this “formula.”
If you have the
opportunity to visit the cemeteries as well as different places, whether they
are artisan workshops, hotels, restaurants or any other establishment during
your visit to Pátzcuaro during the Night of the Dead Season, it is important to retain a high level of respect where
you find an “ofrenda” (altar of the dead), considering that these are
dedicated to people and that their loved ones have made them with love for
their deceased relatives.
So, at all times, we recommend you to ask permission
if you want to take a picture and if you visit the cemeteries, try to
keep quiet, since during this ritual people come to watch over their loved
ones and may be praying or singing.
