The Emperador Caltzontzin Theater of Pátzcuaro, the Cultural Venue of Pátzcuaro

With the remodel and reopening of The Emperador Caltzontzin Theater, Pátzcuaro touts a multifunctional venue for all sorts of cultural events.  This is a major contributing factor toward making this Pueblo Mágico – considered by many to be one of the loveliest in the country – a destination with the infrastructure to support Cultural Tourism.

The legacy of Don Vasco de Quiroga has advanced the tourism industry in Pátzcuaro and the lake area to an international level, especially with the new attraction, Ruta Don Vasco.  We believe Don Vasco would be proud of that legacy.  Through and because of him, the villages on the banks of Lake Pátzcuaro have prospered and have every reason to be very proud of their accomplishments and artisanships.

Needless to say, when we talk about tourism these days, we’re also talking about culture – it’s impossible to separate the two.  But to create this cohesive “package,” it’s obviously necessary to provide the necessary infrastructure – and the “new and improved” Emperador Caltzontzin Teather fits that bill.

The Emperador Caltzontzin Teather, an important heritage site of Pátzcuaro, is a building with history.  In 1936, on the orders of then-president Lázaro Cárdenas, the Teatro was built over what was left of an Augustinian convent of the Seventeenth Century; right next door, the Augustinian temple of the same period is now the famous Gertrudis Bocanegra Public Library.

The Emperador Caltzontzin Theater was designed by architect Alberto le Due and Engineer H. Gomez, in the neo-baroque style.

In 2011, the Theater celebrated its 75th birthday with a major overhaul undertaken by various governmental entities, as well as the Morelia Film Festival.  The Theater is now one of the main venues for the Morelia Film Festival.

It was October 14 of that year when the theater reopened its doors for the Ninth Morelia Film Festival.  To mark the occasion, Arcady Boyter’s classic film “La Mujer del Puerto,” a Golden National Film of the genre, was restored by UNAM.

The improvements were extensive:  special doors were designed to filter out street noises; acoustics, lighting, seating, projection room, projection screen, aisle – even the bathrooms – underwent renovation.  The intimate theater comfortably seats almost 500, and the lobby is multi-use, and there are three exits to the street.

The original murals of the theater, as well as the chandeliers, lamps, and woodwork, were also restored to their original colonial flavour.

On top of everything else, the theater has a great location, facing the Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra (“Plaza Chica”) – just two blocks from Hotel Mansión Iturbe.
