A slow-paced
walk through this transformed square reveals centuries of art, architecture,
and folklore. Our concierge team is always delighted to help guests decode
these fascinating historical layers:
- The Pila del Torito and its Local Lore: Positioned gracefully on the corner, this colonial-era fountain once served as a vital water source for households and a watering hole for muleteers' caravans. It carries a charming local legend regarding a whimsical "trial" the fountain allegedly faced following a minor historical mishap.
A Tapestry of Historic Transformation: During the viceregal period, these grounds formed part of the expansive atrium of the Temple of San Agustín. Its civic identity evolved during the 19th-century Reform War, transitioning into the vibrant public square it remains today.
The Monument to
Doña Gertrudis Bocanegra: At the heart of the plaza stands a striking bronze
statue honoring the local heroine, sculpted by acclaimed artist Guillermo Ruiz
in 1938.

Juan O'Gorman's
Masterpiece Mural: Framing the square is the former Temple of San Agustín—now
functioning as the "Gertrudis Bocanegra" Public Library. Inside lies
a crown jewel of 20th-century Mexican muralism and protected national heritage:
the recently restored History of Michoacán by Juan O'Gorman. The mural
poignantly immortalizes Doña Gertrudis Bocanegra, executed on October 11, 1817,
after serving as a courageous courier and spy for the insurgency, keeping
absolute silence to safeguard her compatriots.
